2150 Enterprise Way, Kelowna, BC, V1Y 6H7Volkswagen's 4Motion system is an advanced all-wheel drive (AWD) system that is designed to improve traction, stability and performance on a variety of surfaces and in different weather conditions.
4Motion adapts to all types of conditions
Basically, the 4Motion system uses a multi-plate clutch located in the rear differential. This clutch is able to control the torque distribution between the front and rear wheels, depending on driving conditions. Under normal driving conditions, the 4Motion system sends the majority of torque to the front wheels to improve fuel efficiency.
However, if the front wheels begin to lose traction, the 4Motion system can automatically send more torque to the rear wheels to improve traction and stability.
In addition to the multi-plate clutch, the 4Motion system also uses a number of other technologies to improve performance and safety, such as sensors that anticipate road conditions.
4Motion performs in all seasons
Some 4Motion systems come with a driving mode selector. For example, both the Tiguan and Atlas are available with a mode that improves stability in winter. The 4Motion system can be particularly useful in snowy or icy conditions, which are very common in Canadian winters.
The 4Motion system is also very effective in summer. For example, if you're driving on a winding road or track, 4Motion can help you maintain better control and stability by providing more grip to the rear wheels. This can help you corner faster and with more confidence.
The 4Motion system can also help improve traction and stability in wet weather, which can be especially helpful if you're driving on a slippery or muddy surface.
On the sporty Golf R, for example, has an electronic limited slip differential (eLSD) to improve torque distribution between the wheels. This improves traction and stability by controlling the amount of torque sent to each wheel, especially when cornering. In addition, the Golf R also features a torque vectoring system that can apply braking force to individual wheels to improve stability and handling.
