2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport vs. 2022 Hyundai Elantra: More Space, More Fun

Sport utility vehicles have so much more to offer than cars in terms of versatility. But sometimes, automakers forget that people still enjoy a dynamic drive and tend to build SUVs that are bland and boring.

Volkswagen incorporates centuries of German engineering into every vehicle it brings to the market, and that includes every SUV in the lineup. The Cross Sport is the perfect balance between versatility and driving dynamics in a stylish package.

Here, we compare the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport with the 2022 Hyundai Elantra to show you that, although the Cross Sport is an SUV, it still has much to offer to those who love to drive.

Two Engines, and Standard All-Wheel Drive in the 2022 Atlas Cross Sport

The Atlas Cross Sport lets you choose between two powerful powertrains. The base engine is a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder unit with an output of 235 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The base engine in the Elantra is far behind, with only 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque.

In fact, out of all the Elantra models, only one has more power than the base Cross Sport. The second engine choice is VW’s 3.6-litre V6 engine with an output of 276 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque.

The Atlas Cross Sport has a very strong advantage with its standard 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. This is essential to overcome Canada’s harshest winters, but it also gives drivers an edge in terms of handling and driving dynamics. You won’t find AWD anywhere in the Elantra lineup, not even as an option.

Space, comfort and tech inside the 2022 Atlas Cross Sport

The Atlas Cross Sport obviously offers more comfort and space for the driver, passengers and cargo. With 1,141 litres of cargo volume when the cabin is full of passengers and 2,203 litres when the 2nd row is flat, you will never have to leave anything behind with the Cross Sport.

The Hyundai Elantra is much more limited in this regard, with only 402 litres of space in the trunk.

The Atlas Cross Sport also offers the IQ.Drive safety package, Car-Net remote services and the Fender premium audio system, among many other features that surpass anything you will find in the Elantra.
