Why buy a 2019 Volkswagen GTI?

We could answer this question with a simple: “Come drive it and figure it out for yourself.” Fact of the matter is that the Volkswagen Golf GTI has never faced stiffer competition by other compact sporty cars. In other words, you deserve a real answer.

And it begins by stating that the Volkswagen GTI is the original compact sporty car. It created a segment and for more than 40 years, it has been the one by which all others are measured. And 43 years later, it remains the standard.

Most think that the Volkswagen GTI is about pure speed and performance, but they’re wrong. The GTI is truly about the pleasure of driving. More than that, it’s about the escape and glorious freedom associated with driving.

For this to happen, power is important but not everything. The MK7 VW GTI features the 228-horsepower turbocharged TSI 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine that also produces 258 lb.-ft. of torque. Whether mated to the standard-issue 6-speed manual of 7-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission, the GTI is certainly quick on its toes.

Speaking of its toes, the GTI’s chassis is one of its finer assets. Starting with its fully independent suspension, this hot-hatch is just as comfortable on the open road as it is carving switchbacks or hitting an apex at your favorite track. This fabulous parlour trick is further enhanced by the GTI’s standard front locking differential and large four-wheel disc brakes. As a quick and civilized daily-driver, the GTI has no equal.

The Volkswagen GTI isn’t all about performance, however. The GTI is, after all, based on a Golf which means that it is inherently versatile and capable of fitting your lifestyle. Every GTI includes an 8-inch touchscreen with app-connect, satellite radio, Bluetooth and loads of room for your crew and all its gear. The beauty with the GTI is that it can be spec’d out for all-go or, for a few extra dollars, can include a slew of luxury features for the show including leather seats, a panoramic sunroof and a premium audio system. All this and it’s still great to drive.

The Volkswagen Golf GTI has often been imitated but never duplicated. The original hot-hatch is still the most rewarding to drive. Do come find out for yourself.
